On Anzac Day, 25 April, Cadets from Bulford Detachment, Gallipoli Company, Wiltshire Army Cadets, joined forces with their sponsor unit, 3 (UK) Division Signals Regiment and Defence Estates, to assist in the cleaning of the Bulford Kiwi.   After a short walk in sunshine led by L/Cpl (more map reading required) Atkin, armed with rakes and spades the team set to work to weed the massive chalk bird, which is the national symbol of New Zealand.
The chalk landmark was carved onto Beacon Hill by the New Zealand Army in 1919 to commemorate its occupation of Sling Camp. Designed by Sergeant Major Percy Blenkarne of the Education Staff at the end of the First World War, it is 420 feet high and has a 150 feet long beak.   During the Second World War it was covered over to prevent the Luftwaffe using it for navigation purposes and is one of several local reminders of the long departed New Zealanders.
The Kiwi has been maintained by various organisations over the years, including the Kiwi boot polish company and now forms an important part of Salisbury Plain’s military history as well as a pleasant land mark for the local community.
