Over the weekend 26th – 28th September 2008, the Champion Company met on Dartmoor for the first time since the damp and dreary exploits at Annual Camp.
With all planning complete everyone met the OC and CSM at Willsworthy Camp on the west edge of the moor on the Friday evening. After settling in 2Lt Calaz (ECO) briefed everyone about the packed programme of activities ahead.
Saturday was met with fantastic weather and saw the cadets split into three groups. One team would walk ‘the moor’ under the watchful eye of our resident Mountain Leaders – OC, 2Lt Calaz and SMI Donaldson. The other two groups would head for Meldon Quarry to leisure bike and climb the quarry.
With Ferozeshah’s answer to the hairy biker, SI Foulkes, and others led the team along the very picturesque ‘Granite Way’ traffic less cycling route. The climbers conducted a variety of climbs in the quarry with Capt. Rogers and SI Hall providing the climbing expertise for all to see.
After a long day and a good meal at Willsworthy, the Company were treated to an insight into life as a soldier in the Second World War. SI Foulkes narrated the story aided by props including clothing and equipment. A special mention must go to Capt. Hogg for being a first class model displaying the clothing (see pictures – British Tank Crew Uniform).
Sunday again saw amazing weather and the groups swapped around to complete the activity weekend. The team all agreed that it was a hugely successful weekend and that it made a nice change to train in such good weather (on Dartmoor!!!!).
Many thanks to all instructors for their support and hard work during the weekend. Special thanks must go to Lt Rowley, SMI Donaldson, the RSM and Capt. Rogers in helping make the weekend a fantastic experience for all.
We look forward to Duke of Edinburgh events in October and November, as well as our next Company weekend at Tilshead CTC between the dates 6th & 7th December 2008.
